On July 20, 1940, the American music magazine Billboard published its first list of the most popular songs. For several decades, the “Hot Billboard” is actually the official hit parade of the US – the largest national music market in the world. It also served as a prototype of many similar charts, compiled on the results of sales around the world. The archive of the hit parade for the previous decades is a fairly accurate indicator of the popularity of a performer in the United States. We collected 10 performers who own the largest number of songs that came in first place on the Billboard chart.
1. The Beatles
In the period from 1964 to 1970, as many as 20 songs of the legendary Liverpool four went to the top of the main American hit parade. In total, the hits of the Beatles lasted 59 weeks at the top. And in April 1964, in the midst of Beatlemania, The Beatles occupied all five of the top positions of the hit parade.
2. Mariah Carey
18 hits at the top of the hit parade from 1990 to 2008, a total of 79 weeks.
3. Elvis Presley
The legendary king of rock ‘n’ roll took first place on the charts 17 times from 1956 to 1969, lasting a total of 79 weeks on top.
4. Michael Jackson
But another recognized king – pop music – hit the top 13 times in the period from 1972 to 1995. His hit “You Are Not Alone” in 1995 became the first single in the history of the hit parade, which debuted at once in the first place.
5. The Supremes
This American maiden soul group, not so well known in Russia as the rest of the list, is considered the most successful American musical ensemble of the 60s. The most famous of the group is Diana Ross. From 1964 to 1969, they occupied the first places of the hot hundred 12 times.
Madonna has the most songs in the top ten – 38, six of them reached the second place, but could not climb to the top of the hit parade. At the top, she visited 12 times – from 1984 to 2000.
Rihanna – the “youngest” participant of this list, also managed to visit the first place of the hit parade 12 times – from 2006 to 2012.
8. Whitney Houston
11 appearances on top of the “hot hundreds” in the period from 1985 to 1995.
9. Stevie Wonder
10 of his hits took the first place in the hit parade in the period from 1963 to 1986.
10. Janet Jackson
Michael is not the only member of the Jackson family on our list. His sister Janet does not lag far behind the famous brother and has in his “asset” 10 appearances on top of the “hot hundred” in the period from 1986 to 2001.
